Dreams: Flights of the Soul

You ever wonder what dreams really are? Some people say they’re just the clutter of the day, your brain trying to clean house while you sleep. Science tells us that biologically, dreams are the brain’s way of processing and consolidating information—sifting through memories, ironing out emotions, even rehearsing possible futures. Freud called them the royal road to the unconscious, the place where our hidden wishes slip past the guard. Jung thought they were bridges to something bigger, connecting us to the symbols and archetypes we all share. And then there’s the practical view—that dreams are nothing more than random sparks, static dressed up as a story. Like your computer running updates in the background while the screen saver makes it look pretty.

But here’s the thing. For me, dreams are more than that. They’re where the soul takes flight, where fantasy brushes right up against reality. It’s the place where love, hate, frustration, and fear mingle in ways the daylight can’t quite manage. For a while, just for a while, you get to live all of it.

When I was younger, I dreamed I could fly. No metaphor—really fly. I could see my town from above, rooftops sharp against the trees, streets stretching out like veins on a hand. And here’s the curious part: years later, when drones and Google Maps showed us the bird’s-eye view of everything, I realized how accurate my dreams had been. The roofs, the streets, the trees—it was all there. Was that my brain doing some clever reconstruction? Or was it something deeper? I can’t say. But I remember the joy of it, the pure exhilaration, like Superman cutting through clouds. It was great fun.

After college, though, those flying dreams disappeared. They turned into falling—falling from windows, rooftops, trees, walls. Falling in every way the mind could imagine. And that made sense. Fresh out of school, I learned quickly that diplomas don’t hand you opportunity. The job market wanted “experience.” But how do you build a pool of experienced people without first giving someone a chance? It works itself out, somehow. Still, in those days, I felt like I was always falling, never finding ground.

During the darkest stretch of my depression, I stopped dreaming altogether. And I missed it. The silence at night felt like another loss. But maybe it was mercy. Maybe my soul decided I needed rest more than visions. If I had dreamed of flying then, it would’ve been cruel, a reminder of a joy I couldn’t touch. In a strange way, I’m thankful I didn’t.

And yes, there are other dreams too—the adult-themed ones, the blush-worthy encounters. I won’t paint those pictures here, but they raise the same question. Biology? Or something more?

As life moved on, I started handling bigger projects at work, managing budgets with more zeroes than I’d ever seen before. Stress came along for the ride. My old companion stage fright never left me, and now I was presenting to rooms full of workers, executives, strangers. Every time I had to speak, I felt sick with dread. And my dreams reflected that fear. I’d find myself naked—locked out of my room, walking down the street, riding a bus, always stripped of everything. Nothing but vulnerability. Every time I woke, I felt relief it wasn’t real, but unease lingered all the same.

These days, my dreams are softer. Random, yes, but tender too. I dream of loved ones who’ve passed on—especially my grandmother. In those dreams, we talk, we laugh, and for those brief nights she’s alive again. I wake with her voice still warm in my ear, and I miss her all the more. I dream of my girlfriend too. She’s in Texas, I’m in Virginia. The distance is tough, but in dreams, we’re together. In those quiet hours, we close the gap that miles try to keep between us.

So what are dreams? Science has its answers. Psychology has its theories. But for me, dreams are the soul’s excursions. They’re visits, rehearsals, reunions. They’re flights into joy, plunges into fear, moments of naked truth. They’re reminders of the people we love, the places we miss, the selves we’re still trying to become.

For a while. Just for a while.

I had and sometimes still have flying dreams too. They are the best. My last flight was kinda like Superman, all Up Up and Away. Even though I have been retired 11 years now, I still have the odd work dream, if I have been trying to solve a problem to close to going to bed. Happy dreaming. Allan

I often dream of work too, and for some reason it’s the bad experience that always pops in.

Why did I dream of dead people today
It was way too scary, I even thought my sister sleeping beside me had died . I had to double check with her
I recited our father throughout the night , and there was no light making it even scarier.

They say that death, as morbid as it is, is not necessarily bad but symbolizes the end of something and a new beginning about to show up. Maybe. 🤔

i used to dream about flying as well, but it was always the same recurring dream. my dreams have always been a jumble of random scenarios, but to this day i remember this one vividly. It was a field, maybe a farm and i was in the air but not too high. i’d watch the little field or farm like a bird — or a drone since that’s probably more relatable today. however, i don’t recall too much, but i do recall the grass. the grass wasn’t kept but it wasn’t that awful grass that leaves your skin irritated after contact, it was the soft kind of grass. the kind that wasn’t thick or full, but the kind where you could feel the earth instantly once you set foot. i don’t really think all too much about this, but that is my favorite kind of grass. it reminds me of spending summers with my grandparents up north, which only brings more memories of those fond times to my mind. but nevertheless, along with grass, there were few trees scattered throughout the landscape — dark green leaves that opposed the vibrant green grass. but the part of the dream that stands tall in my mind is always when i fly through the wooden arch that connects the worn fence together. could it be a metaphor for something greater or a burning emotion deep inside? or could it just be a random spark? science looks for an evidence based explanation, psychology has theories. theories that question the meaning of these dreams we have. the meaning of some may be hard to determine because of the content of the dream (such as my recent one of birds perched on a playground and what looked like french fries scattered all over), but others may mean everything. i wonder what the arch means.

That’s such an interesting dream. If only someone from a very old culture can explain it. I often wonder about why very old cultures are often so close to the embodiment of our soul or spirit.

Sometimes we’re a particle as we go about our waking lives and sometimes we shift into wave soaring above or visiting with family as we dream. Then we are both particle and wave as our physical bodies twitch in the dream.

You have a dreamers view of dreams.

After a horrible nightmare experience when I was very young, about 13, my dreams stopped unless they are answers to questions I hold.

Many times, I go to sleep simply to answer a question that has been particularly nagging waking with the knowledge that I was seeking. Not always, but sometimes.

    Have a great day!

    I have combination flying-falling dreams.

At first, I fly very high and smoothly, happily, but each and every time I then fly low and the dreams become about not flying into high voltage power lines. I seem to be drawn into a very dangerous and deadly situation of risking electrocution through entanglement.

Along with every other personality disorder, I probably have borderline personality disorder. That’s my interpretation. This interpretation has helped me, in practical situations.

The dream interpretation of falling you give is too literal. Dreams want to mess with you more than that. While Freud spoke of dreams as the via regia to the unconscious, he also spoke of the ruses of the unconscious. In other words, you take the royal road to the unconscious, and what you meet there is the devil, at the cross roads. Then, to top it all off, the devil proves helpful.

Thank you for sharing your dreams. I know the flight and the Google Maps view. Sometimes it gets tricky and it becomes difficult to find a way back into the sleeper’s head. For years, I had a dream of a house and each time, I found an unknown room, a tower, a flight of stairs behind curtains… Once, there was a fire. Once, a tower collapsed. The happiest dream in this series was when I found a cellar, complete with a oven and bakery gear.
    Dreams are real.

An interesting post. I had flying dreams when I was a child, too. They seem to be fairly common. I became a commercial pilot but never experienced falling dreams, thankfully! As life became more complex and I took on more work responsibilities, my adult fears and worries transformed into nightmares about being trapped or forgetting how to do something simple like opening a door. Dreams seem to be places where our brains let everything hang out: joys, wishes, longings, fears, delights.

“For me, dreams are a journey of the soul.” I agree 100 percent and would like to expand on this point. Dreaming has nothing to do with science; rather, it’s an inspiration related to the soul, not the mind. Sometimes, we see dreams that our minds can’t remember, while others are recorded and recalled, like dreams about loved ones or childhood memories.

Some dreams aren’t recorded, and no matter how hard we try, we can’t remember them. When visiting an unknown place or meeting new people, we might feel a sense of familiarity, but the memory remains elusive. These experiences are journeys of the soul, connecting us to the past, present, and future. The soul’s connection is directly with Allah Almighty, and dreams come to us through this divine link.

The Holy Spirit, breathed into our bodies by Allah Almighty, guides the soul. The soul is a light with divine knowledge, and our brain’s software contains everything, known only to the soul. When the mind and soul are in harmony, a person can achieve great things. Dreams are tied to divine knowledge, distinct from worldly knowledge and science. Allah Almighty grants this knowledge to whom He chooses.

The universe’s knowledge is within our brain’s software, accessible through the soul. The soul is a powerful light that can traverse everything, unstoppable except by Allah. While challenging, it’s not impossible to tap into this power. I’m humbled to be on this spiritual journey, traveling the heavens while on earth, and I appreciate your prayers. This journey is difficult yet fascinating.

Interesting. To find joy in dreams has never been my experience. My dreams were always nightmares, and the absence of them at this point in my life is a gift of peace. When I was young I used to float through the houses in our neighborhood, every house and room filled with rows and rows of books that would have been a joy if I could have held them and touched them, read them, but each row was haunted by terrifying beings that chased me away.

It has been literal ages since I had flying dreams. My childhood was fraught with trauma, so I know now that those dreams were my unconscious escape from reality.

I also remember having “Déjà vu” – where I would dream something and forget about it for a time and then it would literally happen in the waking world. Short example: A dream about my parents, brother, and myself all riding bikes along this gorgeous dirt road next to a river. Had never seen this place before, but years later… it happened in real life – in a totally different state.

One of the best dreams I had was when a friend of mine (high school) passed away in a tragic car accident. That night, my deceased grandfather and friend visited me in my dreams. It was so surreal that, to this day, I swear they truly did visit me in spirit.

    Or I’m just crazy haha.

Now all my dead relatives come visiting… Sometimes it’s nostalgic but other times I have forgotten to visit them even though they died in 1974, for example. Rarely do I dream in bright color – all muted pastels and neutrals. Flying dreams sound like fun – I only had nightmares about running from attackers! Sweet Dreams.

I also dreamed of flying when I was a kid. It was the only recurring theme I remember besides the very scary dream of being chased by a ghost in my family home. The two dreams were so totally opposed to each other in their tones. I finally stopped dreaming about the scary ghosts when I hit my forties. But I no longer dream of flying either. And here I am in my early 60’s now. Wondering what happened to all of my dreams.
