Tennessee: Land of Tall Tales and Southern ways

There’s something about Tennessee that courts the imagination and livens out the heart with dreams of accidental romance, and the chance of an 80 degree weather with blue skies allover. Maybe it’s that charm where people talk in the most southern way, a combination of English and Molasses, that always seem to end a sentence with a smile. Maybe it’s the splendor of the mountains that surrounds it, where hikers from all over the world walk the famed Appalachian trail and share their adventures and stories.

I came across two dames from Sweden who were doing just that, tired as lumberjacks they happily talked about trees, animals and the landscape. But boy, they sure could use a lengthy bath and some strong soap for they smelled like the trees that the local wildlife have “marked” or bear droppings scattered along the landscape. And that’s okay, it’s Tennessee, it’s where the story telling capital city of the world is. A famous king once roamed around here— The king of Rock and Roll.

There’s a writing on the wall around these parts, and as Paul Laurence Dunbar puts it:

The South’s a place where kindness grows,
Where every smile is warm and slow.
A nod, a laugh, a tender tone—
A charm you carry long after you’ve gone.

That’s Tennessee. It’s where everything’s just a little warmer. Where your tea is sweet, your chicken is fried, and your stories are tall—but true enough to make you believe.

Thanks for dropping by my little corner of the world. If the story gave you a chuckle or made you pause and think, a like would be mighty kind. And if you’re feeling adventurous, well, hitting that subscribe button is like pulling up a chair and staying a while—always room for one more.

I subscribe back, by the way. It’s my way of saying, “Welcome to the club—snacks are in the back, goodtimes up front!”

Your comments make me smile, sometimes laugh out loud, and every now and then, they nudge me to dig a little deeper, write a little better. So, stick around—who knows what we’ll stumble upon next!

people do say those things and it all sounds lovely. But I’m afraid when I think of the US south I always think of slavery

Oh that was a long time ago. Although, in Southern states you can still see the stars and bars flying (Confederate battle flag) but it’s mostly just those ignorant people who say that it’s part of their “heritage”. But don’t be afraid, most of these people are just ill informed and they are really nice people if you get to know them better. Not all, but most.

Don’t let a long-abolished institution mar your opinion of the South. The reality is only the rich landowners kept slaves; the average guy scratching out a living, which represented most southerners, did not. Not even Robert E Lee owned slaves. Also, Northern Africans enslaved those of sub-Saharan Africa; the Turks enslaved people of the Balkans. Slavery was practiced in all four corners of the globe, so wherever you may have traveled, at one time, they practiced slavery. Take it from this Philly dude, go and enjoy the South; there’s much to do!

Yeah, slavery. It’s mostly in the past. But racism is alive and well. Sometimes I’m not proud to be American

Well, after living here for 20 years, I’ve seen just about everything. I haven’t made the Appalachian trail, but I’ve drunk thousands of glasses of sweet tea. That can’t be a bad thing. And, the people who are flying the “Confederate Flag” may not realize it’s a battle flag, not the official flag of the Confederacy.

Yes, that’s what I thought too. It’s somewhat the same here in Richmond, they seem to fly the battle flag rather than the confederacy one. Thanks for sharing ☺️.

I don’t think Paul Laurence Dunbar was writing about southern Virginia, because I lived there for 7 years and “charm” is not what I took away. I was told to “go home, Yankee,” on more than one occasion, and a number of people tried to engage me in discussion (debate) about the “war of northern aggression.” I found some of the friendly people could turn on a dime. “Honey dripping from fangs” was how I described some of the back-stabbing I saw among southern “ladies.” I have pretty much avoided the south since I moved out of Virginia and have never been to Tennessee (outside of a plane change in Memphis). My one exception would be Atlanta, which seems like a big city that happens to be in the south.

I guess you get that sometimes, especially in the more rural parts which I don’t venture to a lot. I’m inviting you to Central to Northern Virginia, from Richmond to Arlington and to the east where you’ll find Williamsburg, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. And the west side in Henrico and Short Pump and all the way to Charlottesville. This is where Virginia flourish now ☺️.
Give us a chance to redeem ourselves, Madeline. 😊
BTW I’m not originally a Virginian but I came to love it here.

Having done 1,550 miles of the Appalachian Trail with another 240 in September, I can confirm we do stink.
