Where the Past Walks Beside Us on Independence Day

Today as the sun comes up over in Richmond, Virginia— I find myself thinking about this city and its past. Richmond is not afraid to show its history. It carries it right out in the open, where you can see it, feel it, with the scars laid bare. It’s not hidden or polished. It’s in the brick walls and the worn-down steps, in the church bells and train horns. It’s in the silence between whispers, and in the noise of peaceful discord.

Here, the past doesn’t feel distant—it walks beside the present, but this city keeps looking forward. There’s hope here. A kind of quiet revival you can feel if you stand still long enough.

Being here now is like standing between two rivers. On one side, you have the James—steady, patient, always moving east. On the other side, you have the unknown. The part of life no map can explain. And in the middle, there’s Richmond. A city that once held the reins of something dark and cruel, and yet somehow found its way to something better. A place that’s learning, still changing, still standing.

I look around and I see not a city but country—its story written right into every corners and cracks. It’s there in the pavement. It echoes in the hum of every pickup truck that rolls down Broad Street. And every face I see say the same thing to me: America.

We’re the sons and daughters of the forgotten, the tossed aside. The scum of failing empires. The broken pieces of old wars and bad governments. But we came here anyway. And built Institutions. Roads. Schools. Dreams. Somehow, in all that mess, we built something worth keeping.

And in this Fourth of July, the rest of the country could learn something from this city.

Right now, it feels like we’re being pulled apart, pitted against each other in matters of pettiness. Not by strangers, but by people who wants only power. People who need us to hate each other so they can stay on top. So they could stifle wisdom and our American values. To keep us afraid. But that’s not who we are. It never has been.

It took guts to come here. Guts to cross the ocean. Guts to stand up to a king and say, no more! That kind of courage runs deep in this country—even if we forget it sometimes.

And the rocket’s red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
.”

I’ve always been proud to be here—even now, in spite of everything going on for I know we will rise, endure, and overcome.

I’ll step outside now, breathe in the air and fill my lungs with the deep clean air of democracy—thick as it is—and feel what it means to be part of something bigger than myself. That’s what this day’s about. Not fireworks. Not parades. But the chance to stop for one moment and remember what we’re part of.

To feel it in your chest—the weight of freedom, and the cost of keeping it.

Happy Independence Day, Richmond. Happy Fourth of July, America!

Let’s not forget what we’ve been given. Or what we’re still fighting for —A republic, if we can keep it!

Very nicely said, we will as a country, as a people will endure. And for all the bad and all the good that we were, what we are, what we will become. We evolve it happens whether we want it to or not. It is an honor and a privilige to live here in America the Beautiful.

    Happy 4th of July.

    From here in Richmond….

Loved the way you wrote this, and how it’s rooted in place. I’ve only been to Richmond once, and it was to attend the National Veteran’s Wheelchair Games with my husband and a bus full of veterans from Massachusetts. I will never forget that trip (because it’s when we got engaged!) but seeing all of those men and women who had come together to be part of a unified force – despite their differences of race, gender, opinion, age, and experience. It was a powerful thing to witness, in a beautiful place, and I always think about that when I think about how our country can be a place where people from many places can become one. There is so much at stake right now, and I hear you. I hope that people can see the humanity around us and look past the messages of those who have things to gain from making us hate one another, and understand that there is more to be gained from loving and fighting for one another.

It is sad that at this time America has a president who is doing more harm then good America was once a place I would have liked to visit but honestly the way things are at this time I am not interested. America has been a world leader for so long and yeah it still is in some ways but in other ways it isn’t. I do hope all my American friends have a wonderful, joyful and safe 4th July

Thank you Joan. Rest assured that the American people are not tyrants. Most of us don’t care about politics and just try to live our lives. American ideals of truth and justice will prevail… one fine day soon.

Hi Warren, we Americans are not Trump. There is a lot of disillusionment these days but please be assured that American Ideals are much bigger than any man, tyrant or otherwise.
Also, please know that the average American loves Canada and the Canadian people, we have so much in common and we have fought together in wars, hand in hand, like brothers. One day soon America will find her footing and be herself again. ā˜ŗļø

Very amazing post. I haven’t been to Richmond since 1990 and I hope it’s better than it was then but there were parts of Richmond that I thought were very beautiful. Thanks for posting this. Have a great Fourth of July.

I hope so, and yeah, but I have to say I am still terrified. Not long after Trump bombed Iran I thought, we have uranium, lots…we also have nuclear power plants…we also helped India build theirs, and they then used that tech to build their own nukes…how long before he turns those bunker bombers north? Sure British soldeirs marched south from what is now Canada, and burned down the Whitehouse I think in August of 1814…..maybe this is payback?

Warren, it’s not gonna happen. Canada might have helped India build Nuclear plants and for good reasons. The technology for the weapons however is Soviet (or Russian).
Trump is not America, most of us are good people. Your people too.

I am glad to be an American who loves the deepest blue of California and New York and lives in deep red Nebraska. I believe there should be no kings, dictators, nor oligarchs of any stripe. We must stand together to refresh our constitutional democracy in this time of constitutional crisis.

Beautifully spoken! Your words echo the hearts of every true American. The way you’ve woven the past into what is happening today is brilliant! It speaks to our hearts and reminds us that just as our ancestors did, we must fight against a tyrannical government intent on destroying democracy. Your words have inspired my American spirit to sit up and take notice, and realize that we must fight to survive against tyrannical wanna be dictators. Our spirit, our truth, our America are well-worth fighting for! Blessings, Susan authorsusankearl@gmail.com

I came back for a reread, also another you passed on that landed in my reader. The burnt hotdogs. I spied my husband watching the hot dog eating contest, it was the women. Not sure what they won, likely container of Pepcid. Odd year for celebration for me, hoping some pops will lighten my heavy heart. Happy 4th, the house in Richmond. šŸ˜‰šŸ™ŒšŸ’ž

The USA doesn’t seem democratic to me. It’s an oligarchy. And freedom seems to have been taken too far. Some seem to believe it means freedom to take whatever you want. Well, I don’t live there so I’m an outside observer.

One thing that did strike me recently was how violent parts of the national anthem seem to be and I wonder if other anthems are similar?

Some so called ā€œChristiansā€ in this country are indeed not. They don’t follow the teachings of Christ.
There are only 2 things that they should remember but they choose not to.
      1. The love of God
      2. Love they neighbours
That’s it and yet, here we are.

Yes, I think there is always a remnant; this does not include those who behave like Pharisees. “11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, ā€œWhy does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?ā€Ā 12Ā OnĀ hearing this,Ā Jesus said,Ā ā€œIt is notĀ theĀ healthyĀ whoĀ needĀ a doctor,Ā butĀ theĀ sick.Ā 13But go and learn what this means: ā€˜I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.ā€ Matthew 9:11-13
