I’ve been thinking a lot about something I posted recently—about history, about monuments, about the things we choose to remember and how we choose to remember them. And while I stand by what I said, I also recognize that saying it the way I did may have hurt some of my neighbors, people I share this place with, people I respect.
For that, I apologize.
Not for my opinion, because I still believe in it. But for the way I put it out there—without enough care for how it might land, without considering that behind every opinion, behind every debate, there are real people with real feelings and real connections to these things.
I should have thought more about that before posting. I should have chosen my words with more care, or maybe even kept them to a conversation rather than putting them out into the world in a way that might cause pain instead of understanding.
The truth is, I don’t want to add to the division that already exists. I don’t want to make anyone feel unheard or disrespected. We live in the same city, walk the same streets, breathe the same air. That has to count for something.
So, again, I’m sorry for any hurt I caused. I’ll do better next time. And if you ever want to sit down and talk about it, really talk, I’m here. Because conversations are where understanding starts.
Take care, and stay good to each other.
