Richmond Has Turned Into a Slow Cooker

By a guy who washed his car just in time for the rain to do it all over again.

There are hot days, and then there are Richmond days in July, where stepping outside feels less like opening your front door and more like volunteering to be steamed like a dumpling.

It’s absurd.

Even Georgie has had enough. Normally, he’s ready for a proper walk, tail wagging, nose inspecting every blade of grass in the neighborhood. Now he looks outside, takes one sniff of the air, gives me the sort of look usually reserved for people who put pineapple on pizza, and quietly retreats back into the house. Our afternoon walks have become negotiations with Mother Nature, and Mother Nature isn’t interested in compromise.

The plants aren’t coping much better. They stand there all day under a blazing Virginia sun looking as though they’re about to unionize. If plants had lawyers, there’d already be a lawsuit demanding protection from cruel and unusual humidity. Every leaf seems to be saying, “We did not sign up for this.”

The birds have disappeared entirely. I don’t know where they’ve gone. Perhaps they’ve booked a weekend in Maine. The squirrels, usually sprinting around like tiny caffeinated acrobats, have also vanished. Maybe they’ve discovered air conditioning. Either that or they’ve simply melted into the trees.

Only the tomatoes seem delighted by the whole affair.

While every other living thing is questioning its life choices, the tomatoes are behaving like they’ve just checked into an all-inclusive Caribbean resort. Bigger. Redder. Happier. Frankly, they’re becoming rather smug about it.

Yesterday morning, before the atmosphere turned into hot soup, I decided to wash the car. It was one of those rare moments when everything goes perfectly. The paint gleamed. The windows sparkled. I even stood back with that ridiculous sense of satisfaction only a freshly cleaned car can provide.

Then I went inside, sat down with a cup of coffee, switched on the television…

…and it rained.

Not a polite little shower, either. A proper Richmond downpour, complete with enough dirty water to undo every minute of effort I’d just invested. Somewhere up above, the weather was clearly having a laugh.

That’s the thing about summer here. You spend half the day trying to avoid becoming dehydrated, the other half trying to avoid getting soaked, and somehow achieve neither.

Roll on October.

I subscribe back, by the way. It’s my way of saying, “Welcome to the club—snacks are in the back, good times up front!”

Your comments make me smile, sometimes laugh out loud, and every now and then, they nudge me to dig a little deeper, write a little better. So, stick around—who knows what we’ll stumble upon next!

Now, now, don’t be picking on the pineapple-loving pizza people out there. It’s all about the karma, dude. 😉

Over here, the car washers take leave if it rains or about to rain. According to them, what’s the use of cleaning when it’s going to be muddied by the rains.

Talking of heat and humidity, I am fighting a losing battle with the rodents who every night sneak in to rake up soil off the plant pots and chew up all the leaves.

Love your vivid descriptions and witty writing! I was a short-lived blogger, having my daughter write while my family was in Malawi last year. So grateful you stumbled on my blog and that I get the pleasure of following your musings. It was in June of last year that I read a similar post by you regarding Virginia’s heat. I found it way more amusing while halfway across the globe, where it was “winter” and the weather was extremely pleasant. Reading this post while also in Richmond, while not as amusing, definitely relatable and also I am in awe that while the posts addressed the same topic, you managed to write this one completely different than the first. You are such a talented writer!

Last year, after jetting over the South American continent and the Atlantic Ocean to see my daughter, i found myself subjected to hard labour, digging up her garden and laying turf. She did bring me the odd cup oc tea and words of encouragement. The result was indeed pleasing despite resentful knees and back. She has just sent me a picture of the nearly dead brown ex-green carpet. And in the middle, a big paddling pool for my granddaughter. Me, my knees, my back, all fear a return trip this autumn.

I lived in the South for a while. Things get unendurable in that humidity 20° lower than anywhere else. Streets become deserted at 80°. You have my sympathy!

That heat does not sound like fun. Your comment on the rain making the car dirty surprised my New Zealand mindset when rainwater = clean drinking water. On the West Coast of the South Island – one of the wettest places in the world at up to 9 metres a year, parking in a good downpour is the best way to wash the car.

The birds, squirrels, rabbits, and goslings are all up in NOVA playing chicken with cars (or giving my deeply unhappy Malamute a reason to sprint instead of melt into the grass during our walks). The Great Tomato Fairy, alas, has decided that I’ll only get two cherry tomatoes this year. Between weather that’s seesawed between cold snap, Crock-Pot and wow-should-we-have-gotten-a-whole-house-surge-protector-even-though-our-electrician-thinks-it-wouldn’t-help, all of my tomato plants have checked out early … or the birds and squirrels have gotten all the fruit before I’ve noticed them.

😂 So that’s where they are! Secret for tomatoes… so when you plant them, put a whole fish in the soil, it won’t smell but make sure that it is buried properly otherwise the raccoons will dig it up. With the fish, tomatoes will give you lots of fruits. I learned that from a Native American here in Henrico ☺️.

Is it a fish for each tomato plant, or one for each patch of tomatoes? How large is the fish? Does it have to be a proper eatin’ fish or would a bait fish work? Do I sound like a crazed person whose two, count them two cherry tomatoes GOT ET before I could pick them?

I think you can use any fish. ☺️
