Three Years from Now (Assuming I Don’t Win the Lottery or Get Hit by a Bus)

“What will your life be like in three years?” they ask, as if I’ve got some grand master plan drawn up on a whiteboard somewhere. Truth is, I don’t. I barely know what I’m having for lunch tomorrow, let alone what I’ll be doing in 2028. But if the universe doesn’t hurl any major surprises my way, I’d be quite happy to keep things exactly as they are — only with a bit more confidence, a few fewer worries, and maybe a car that looks european, as reliable as a japanese and as loud as an american.

Now, if we’re talking about big changes — well, I wouldn’t exactly say no to winning the lottery. But here’s the thing: I’d still want to keep my head screwed on straight. None of that “buying a gold-plated jet ski” nonsense. I’d want to do something meaningful — help a few people out, clean up a river or two, maybe fund a park bench with my name on it that says, “He Meant Well.” Something with a legacy.

But let’s be honest. In three years, I’ll just be older — possibly greyer, definitely grumpier — still doing a job I actually enjoy (assuming no one fires me for telling the truth again), and living with the love of my life, who somehow still puts up with me. And of course, my little dog Georgie will still be there, trotting around like he owns the place, occasionally judging me from the sofa with that face that says, “You could’ve walked me ten minutes longer.”

So yes — three years from now, I’m not asking for yachts or fame or a private island shaped like my head. I just want peace of mind, a steady job, the woman I love, and my dog beside me. And maybe — just maybe — a bit of luck that keeps the madness of life at bay. Because in the end, that’s the real jackpot, isn’t it?

if I were one of the 3 dwarfs I’d be the 8th, grumpier than grumpy….I’m that grumpy old guy now…now you’ve got me thinking, how much more grumpy will I be in 3 years?

Hopefully happier, but just grumpy enough to have that Clint Eastwood vibe ☺️.

Because of what I’ll be doing three years from now (if I don’t win a WSOP main event or get shot in the head by someone who didn’t like that I told the truth), I don’t have three minutes of spare time right now. I just had to say that in 2028, I will be a newly minted, 65-year-old J.D.

I have no idea what I’ll be doing in 3 years… hopefully still around to spoil my grandchildren. Also, still well enough to enjoy the mountains here in New Mexico. I don’t take life for granted any more, so I’ll be happy if I’m still healthy.

After early 2020, I ignore the “where will you be in x years” questions.

Was that because of the Pandemic?

        Yes.

In late 2019 and early 2020 I was working on a project to speed entry into sports stadiums and concert venues, for a company whose two main sources of income related to driver’s licenses and airline flights.

First the sports stadiums and concert venues closed.

Then the driver’s license offices closed and no one was flying.

        Then my employer’s revenue nosedived.

Then I was laid off, and any long-term predictions of my future activities went out the window.

So wise. That is exactly how I feel – apart from the steady job (I have retired after 45 years in the IT industry and am loving it).
We live a frugal lifestyle, not from strict necessity but because that is how we like to live. My main lifestyle learning has been to seek value from every dollar and avoid expensive routines. For example, we can easily afford to go out to dinner but only do so for a special occasion with friends – then it is money well spent. Going out every week would, for us, be ‘just another dinner’, not a memorable experience and therefore not good value for money.
