Life, Love, and the Occasional Falling Badger

By a Guy Who Still Believes the World Isnโ€™t Entirely Mad

Whilst walking the other day, I started thinkingโ€”never a good idea, but there we areโ€”about how life changes. Sometimes softly, like the slow drift of autumn leaves. Other times, it hits you like a falling badger. And if youโ€™ve never had a badger fall on you, imagine a hairy bowling ball with teeth and an attitude. Anyway, if I had my way, Iโ€™d still be in England, in that little house with my kidsโ€ฆ though perhaps not with my ex-wife. That particular โ€œlife changeโ€ goes in the same drawer as getting rid of flared jeansโ€”one of those changes humanity can all be quietly thankful for.

Now, the world today? How it has changed and itโ€™s gone completely bonkers. Protests in Europe, shouting matches in America, and everyone convinced theyโ€™re fighting the same noble struggle. Theyโ€™re not. The British, especially, seem tense about it allโ€”and fair enough. You canโ€™t squeeze 70 million people onto an island the size of a hummingbird’s lunchbox without a few nerves showing. Some say โ€œBritishnessโ€ is being diluted, that cities donโ€™t look the same anymore. I canโ€™t prove that, but I do have an opinion. Of course I do.

See, I was a British immigrant once. Still a British citizen, technically. When I first moved there, I genuinely loved itโ€”the people, the history, the dry humor that sounds like an insult but isnโ€™t (mostly). I adored the English, admired the Scots, tolerated the Welsh, and thoroughly enjoyed the Irishโ€”especially their beer. I wanted to be part of that world. Thatโ€™s what immigration should be, really. Move somewhere because you love it and respect it. Not because you want to change it to “your former country MK II”. Of course, some people donโ€™t have a choiceโ€”war, disaster, politiciansโ€”but even then, respect for your hosts, the people there, should be the bare minimum.

Meanwhile, in the good olโ€™ U.S. of A., immigration has turned into a sport where everyone loses. Sure, deal with the criminalsโ€”no sane person wants cartels and violent gangs setting up shop next to the local Dairy Queenโ€”but demonizing entire groups? Thatโ€™s not patriotism; thatโ€™s evil with better PR. Itโ€™s the sort of thing that makes Satan sit up and say, โ€œHey, thatโ€™s my line!โ€

But not everythingโ€™s dreadful. A buddy of mine just clawed his way out of depression, and thatโ€™s a win worth celebrating. The guyโ€™s the human equivalent of a bar jukeboxโ€”always laughing, always with a storyโ€”and to see him go silent was awful. For a while, I thought Iโ€™d lose him. But heโ€™s back now, cracking jokes, grinning like a man whoโ€™s just found an extra fry at the bottom of the bag. Suddenly the world feels like itโ€™s got its color back.

Now, if thereโ€™s one constant I refuse to change, itโ€™s my dog, Georgie. Heโ€™s been my sidekick for six yearsโ€”small, stubborn, and far too clever for his own good. When I first brought him home from Pennsylvania to Virginia, he sat in his little box, looking adorableโ€”until he dropped a bomb so foul it couldโ€™ve cleared Congress. I nearly blacked out, rolled down the windows, dashed into a Walmart, and gave him the worldโ€™s quickest bath in the menโ€™s room. Bought new towels, a fresh box, and swore never to trust that innocent face again.

Through the pandemic, it was just me and Georgie in our 600-square-foot apartment. I had a single bed, which he treated like it was his. Every night, heโ€™d sneak up, sigh heavily, and fall asleep pressed against me like a hot water bottle with fur. Weโ€™d walk at dawn, just us, the mist, and the odd squirrel giving us the side-eye. My neighbors and I even came up with a dog-care plan in case someone got sick. There were charts, schedules, Q&A sessionsโ€”it was like NASA Mission Control, but with Labradors. Meanwhile, the dogs couldnโ€™t care less. They tore around, jumped in the pool, and barked at invisible squirrels while we humans congratulated ourselves on being responsible adults.

Then, last week, I got the flu. Proper man-flu. The kind that makes you think your obituary should be drafted immediately. Fever, vomiting, joints that felt like rusted hingesโ€”the full package. My girlfriend, bless her, lives in Texas and texted every five minutes to check if I was still breathing. Sheโ€™s the kindest, funniest woman you could ever meetโ€”the type who says โ€œyโ€™allโ€ and somehow makes it sound like love. But after the 237th โ€œare you okay, honey?โ€, I had to mute my phone before I threw it out the window.

Georgie, however, went full Florence Nightingale. He wouldnโ€™t leave my side, not even to bark at the neighborโ€™s catโ€”a cat so smug it could run for office. When we tried to walk, Georgie did his business, then turned around and dragged me home. Even when eating, heโ€™d glance up mid-chew, checking if I was still alive. Honestly, it was sweetโ€”if you ignored the smell of chicken kibble and my slow mental collapse.

But Iโ€™m fine now. Back on my feet. My girlfriendโ€™s forgiven me for disappearing, Georgieโ€™s stopped acting like my nurse, and the squirrels are once again mocking us from the trees. The world may be a madhouseโ€”run by squirrels, probablyโ€”but between a loyal dog and a woman who cares, it all feelsโ€ฆ alright.

Maybe even great.

I think the British are probably the worst at going to a corner of the world and trying to turn it into a version of Britain. There are so many expats in Spain who don’t speak Spanish and only go to English shops and bars. Probably the same people who complain about immigrants to the UK ‘not learning the language’ and ‘not fitting in’. Glad you enjoyed your sojourn in our country

Another warm story. Georgie made me think of my cat Cheeky who died a couple of months ago. She dribbled a lot – which they didn’t warn me about when I rescued her 7 years or so ago when she was 6 yrs old. The dribbling drove me up the wall, but I’d give an arm for it now. Pets, canine or feline – doesn’t matter does it. Better than some of the dribblers in control over where you are & getting closer here all the time. Keep writing and give Georgie a hug from me – glad he’s looking after you. Norma xx

Hey… welcome back to the living… I know the feeling. I am now in week 4 of healing from having wrist surgery… bone spurs in my little known tiny hand bone called the trapezoid bone due to osteoporosis. I can finally use my fingers again but typing is still a challenge. I am hoping my body doesn’t miss having that bone since it’s been with me for 77 years already.

With regard to the U.S. of A, I too am getting tired of seeing “that moron’s face” in the news, so I now limit my on line footprint to an hour a day. Hopefully soon, he will cease to exist and we can go back to being that wonderful place I’ve called home since 1948.

My husband and I (of 34 years) finally tied the knot at city hall because we’re afraid of what the gvmt is going to do to same sex couples in this country but here in Colorado, marriage is legal so we feel at least a little safe.

Glad to hear that Georgie helped you through your illness. We lost our 3rd cat Gus, two years ago to blindness… he was 20 yrs old. I miss how our pets used to respond to our human frailness’ and put in extra efforts to make us more comfortable. They seemed to have that 4th sense. We still have a family of squirrels that visit our upper balcony daily, looking thru the glass patio doors hoping to rile up the cats. And yet, we still leave them treats. Oh, well. Life goes on. Thanks for letting me share.

    Take care,

A thoughtful essay! Many thanks, I enjoyed reading it. So, the Irish and beer – I must be the exception though I do enjoy the occasional drink. Your friend, with the jokes and all the fun, is still depressed just covering it well enough to fool people. Overall, yes the world is a changing place, changes difficult to comprehend and accommodate very often. As the years pile on, with me, I find myself a little more and more out of step yet feel to great inclination to get into step.

Fabulous post. Always a joy to read. I make it a point to check on you at least once a week if possible. Hate the flu, and am glad you are feeling better. That stuff can be downright nasty, ya’all! You are right about the USA. We swing 100% one direction, then 100% back the other way. It is crazy. I, for one, am all for 100% lawful and legal immigration, and 100% against unlawful illegal immigration. There’s the 100% again! ๐Ÿ˜‰ K.Kay
